PETRONAS Trackside Fluid Engineers Stephanie Travers and En De Liow give an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the PETRONAS Trackside Laboratory. Located within the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team garage, the state-of-the-art laboratory is used by the PETRONAS Trackside Fluid Engineers to monitor and analyse approximately 150 samples of PETRONAS Fluid Technology Solutions™ at every Grand Prix. Using dedicated machinery within the laboratory, the PETRONAS Trackside Fluid Engineers extract and run samples of the fluids before and after every session. The analysis ensures the Primax fuel, Syntium oil and Tutela functional fluids are compliant with the sport’s technical regulations and are operating at their optimum levels.
PETRONAS, the team’s Title and Technical partner, has powered the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team since 2010, with the Fluid Technology Solutions™ continuing to be an invaluable contributor to the team’s performance, reliability and efficiency. Stephanie Travers and En De Liow were both appointed as Trackside Fluid Engineers following their success in the 2018 and 2019 PETRONAS global talent searches. Now, they travel alongside the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team to every Grand Prix on the Formula 1 calendar to conduct fluid analysis from the PETRONAS Trackside Laboratory. They are supported by the wider PETRONAS Fluid Technology Solutions™ team in Malaysia and Italy.
Stephanie Travers was selected from 7,000 candidates in the inaugural PETRONAS global talent search, joining the team trackside at Barcelona testing in 2019. Born in Zimbabwe, Stephanie made Formula 1™ history in 2020 when she became the first black woman to stand on the podium at the Styrian Grand Prix. Stephanie is now in her third season as a PETRONAS Trackside Fluid Engineer. En De Liow, who is from Malaysia, joined the team as a PETRONAS Trackside Fluid Engineer in 2020 after being selected from the second consecutive talent search. En De is now in his second season with the team.
