The Formula 1 Exhibition London has announced that Aryton Senna’s McLaren MP4/4 will be exclusively displayed at the new exhibition opening on August 23 at ExCeL London. Tickets are now available here. Senna, widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers to grace Formula 1 , won his first FIA F1 Drivers’ Championship title in the MP4/4. Despite its dominance throughout 1988, the car continues to define one of the sport’s golden eras. During that season, Senna rewrote the record books with eight wins to beat the old record of seven jointly held by Jim Clark (1963) and Alain Prost (1984). His 13 pole positions also eclipsed Nelson Piquet’s previous record of nine (1984).
Until Red Bull Racing’s unprecedented success last year, the McLaren MP4/4 was Formula 1’s most successful Grand Prix car with 15 wins from 16 race starts – a 93.8% – win ratio. By the end of the season, McLaren had secured the FIA F1® Constructors’ Cup with a phenomenal 199 points, almost three times the tally of runner-up Ferrari.
Senna’s arrival from Lotus earlier that year was instrumental in Honda switching its allegiance away from Nelson Piquet and his Williams team. Honda’s RA168-E was a new, more powerful and fuel Efficient engine that formed a perfect package with McLaren’s efficient chassis, suspension and aerodynamic design. The car will be exclusively displayed at The Formula 1 Exhibition London from August 23
